Gossip Girl OG vs Reboot: Who wore it better?

 By Suhotra Tripathi

When it comes to defining Y2K fashion we come to see the likes of Ashley Tisdale, Paris Hilton, and maybe the Olsen Twins, while these ladies still remain staples for the early Y2K fashion, there is no way they compare to what caught the late Y2K's by the storm, Gossip Girl.

Gossip Girl was a fashion relief when it first came out back in 2007, a beacon of light in the dark ocean of feather extensions and dresses over jeans. People finally realised that it was the time to rip off the god awful panther tops and put on a sensible pair of heels and a plaid skirt. This show revolutionised fashion by giving us looks that remain iconic to this day. Whether it was Blair and the Clique's preppy school girl approach or Serena Van Der Woodsen's boho chic, Gossip Girl never failed when it came to nailing down trends of the week.

Unfortunately the show ended back in 2012, leaving an upper east side shaped void in our hearts, but in 2021 HBO decided to give us a reboot, a new era of Gossip Girl for a new audience.

While the show had quite a few Gen Z references and the iconic voice of Kristen Bell, as Gossip Girl, we aren't quite sure if styling was quite up to the mark.

Show tried to emulate the style of the original, as we got to see the iconic forest green plaid uniforms worn by our Gen Z Chucks and Blairs, on the steps of the Met, or Audrey slapping us in the face with her bangs and tightly fitted black dresses.

No matter how much critical acclamation the acting might have received, but the street wear- esque looks our characters sported, with a nod to the original took it to another level.

Audrey was a splitting image of Blair, with her plaid jumpers and her understated dresses. The perfect reflection of an upper east Side socialite. Her most iconic outfit from the season would be the black mini dress with the corseted mesh torso. Very similar to what Blair would've worn to a date.

Another one of the memorable looks was by Jordan as she stepped into a club, with a green slip dress, while positions played in the background. Her style throughout the show included several pieces from Net a Porter and Gucci, establishing her as the Serena of the show.

We can't not talk about Zion Moreno's Luna, an underrated fashion icon. Everything she wore on the show had the potential to become a statement look for the decades to come. The bright colors and dainty necklines, she sported turned into a sensation across Instagram. I loved her approach towards color blocking, and bringing back the 2016 hairstyles. The wardrobe picked out for her was absolutely terrific and did justice to her character.

Overall the fashion of the reboot was really edgy and current with subtle nods towards the original, and it did not fail to live up to the expectations.
